Vegetarians in Prague

(London)

Hi!

Firstly thanks for your great website! I have been learning some phrases and printed out your map :-)

My question is whether there is much vegetarian food/restaurants in Prague? My husband eats fish but I don't eat any animals so would be great to know in advance if there are any good veggie places to eat!

We will get breakfast at our hotel but other meals we will need to eat out.

We leave on Monday (11 June)!

Thanks!

Our answer:

Hi Pixie,

Thanks for taking the time to share your questions. There are a variety of vegetarian and a few vegan restaurants in Prague.

First, just a general note about restaurants in Prague. Many restaurants may offer a few selections of "vegetarian" meals on their menu, even though they may seem like a typical meat 'n potatoes kind of place.

For example, an item like fried cheese may really hit the spot if you're not a vegan - so don't give up on traditional Czech restaurants right away. You will quickly notice when you're walking around that many restaurants post their menus outside so have a look when you can.

If finding a strictly vegetarian restaurant isn't convenient while you're out and about, then the best solution is to find a restaurant with an international styled menu. There are lots of choices throughout the city which will make things easier for you. Of course, the variety of Asian influenced eateries in Prague will also serve lots to choose from.

Here are a few "vegetarian" restaurants in Prague that you might consider. These aren't necessarily vegan, so expect items like cheese and eggs on a few of the menus.

Country Life, www.countrylife.cz
If you're into eating healthy and vegetarian, then this is the place to go. Their cafeteria-style dining is casual and ideal for lunch or dinner. Their main location is very close to Old Town Square and their adjacent grocery is great for baked goods and snacks. Melantrichova 15, Old Town.

Lehka Hlava (Clear Head), www.lehkahlava.cz
A wonderful cozy atmosphere combines design and delicious food in Old Town. We love to go here and walk along the riverside after having a good meal. Their rotating lunch menu is smart and very cheap. If you come for dinner then consider making a reservation. Borsov 2, Old Town, 222 220 665.

Maitrea, www.restaurace-maitrea.cz
A delightful and beautiful restaurant on a little street in Old Town near St. Tyn Church. The menu is very diverse from bean burrito to a veggie-meat kung pao. We love almost everything on the menu including the fresh juices and soothing teas. Tynska 6, Old Town. 221 711 631.

Beas, www.beas-dhaba.cz
Another vegetarian buffet style restaurant. Lots of Indian influences here, right down to the metal trays and cups. Lunchtime can be busy, but it's worth the wait for a table and it's always affordable. Tynska 19, Praha 1.

Maly Budha, www.malybuddha.cz
Asian restaurant with quiet dark atmosphere and delicious food. Combine a visit here with a stroll through Petrin park across the street for incredible views over the city. Not far from the castle. Uvoz 46, Hradcany. 220513894.

Radost Café, www.radostfx.cz
A long-standing vegetarian restaurant with a variety of food. This is a hip place with dance club and lounge connected. Brunch on the weekends is always nice. Not far from Wenceslas Square and the metro I.P. Pavlova. Belehradska 120. 224 254 776.

Govinda, www.govindarestaurace.cz
Tasty vegetarian dishes brought to you by the Hare Krishna Movement. Not too far from Old Town and the metro Florenc. Soukenicka 27.

Mlsna Kavka, www.mlsnakavka.cz
A nice mix of meals from tagliatelle and risotto to traditional Czech sweet dumplings with apricots. Just outside of Old Town in a local non-tourist area. Brunch every Sunday, looks ideal to us. Sokolovská 29. 777 913 054.

Well, these are just a few ideas. Again, don't give up on typical Czech restaurants throughout the city before checking a few menus.

Let us know how your trip goes. We're sure you'll have some great insights to share with us and other readers.

UPDATE!!!
----------

Hello again!

We are back from Prague and had a fantastic time! It is my favourite city so far.

I even imagined moving there as it is more calm, beautiful and cheap than London!! We still have things to see that we could not fit in to our 2 and a half days so we will definitely go back next year!

Thank you for your veggie restaurant suggestions, we ate at Maitrea which was AMAZING!!!!

And also we tried Mlsna Kavka where I enjoyed the apricot dumplings! We also ate at normal restaurants as you suggested and the veggie options were nice too :-)
