Visit Trebon
Trebon is a cool little historical town in South Bohemia that's perfect for a weekend getaway from Prague. It has wonderful walking and biking trails nearby that make it a perfect alternative to other more popular destinations in the Czech Republic. | | Main Square and Church in Trebon |
This little city has a cozy historical square, beautiful chateau, a huge nearby lake with walking trail around it and some great fish restaurants. And, there is a variety of small pensions and apartments in the city center. Třebon itself is in a low-lying part of the country with many ponds, fisheries and plenty of nice biking and walking trails. Pond building made this city famous and you can find exhibitions and historical information in the chateau.

You can even rent bikes from a variety of places in the center of town and cruise around the huge fish pond. The trail around it is flat and an easy 12 km (7.5 mi).

Třebon is only 150 km (93 mi) south of Prague. It's about 2 hours by car and 2.5 hours by train. There is one train change, but it's not complicated and easier on the environment than a car.

The Schwarzenberg Tomb (above) is an interesting stop nearby the huge Svet (World) Lake. The Schwarzenberg family ruled the Trebon area from 1600 - 1945. And, many family members are buried here. You can find it by following the marked walking trails. You can also consider combining a trip to Třebon with other similar cities. Tabor is closer to Prague and equally interesting. And, of course the ever popular Cesky Krumlov is in some ways more impressive than Prague.

If you decide to visit, you will find less tourists and lower accommodation prices in the winter months (November - March). But this also means that some places, including the Schwarzenberg Tomb, will be closed. Many historical points of interest outside of Prague are only open April - October.
