This week we visit Pisecka Brana.
We recently headed to this unique Prague sight because of
a kid's day of activities. Even we had neglected to include it in our
hidden sights.
Pisecka Brana was built as part of Prague's fortification
in 1791 by one of Prague's most famous builders, Krystof
Dienzenhofer. The gate, along with others in the city, was
originally part of the city's baroque defense system. This
area is now part of central Prague, but at the time of
construction it was considered a suburb. In the suburb was
Pisek square - hence the name Pisecka.
You can easily walk around it's uncommon exterior and
stop here for a coffee on your way to Prague
Castle. The gate itself is not a large attraction in
size so most of what you will experience is just from
walking around its perimeter.
The top of the gate is now covered with grass and we've
seen people hanging out there in the summer - although
technically not allowed - but still a cool spot.

The elements of the front and back sides of the gate are
completely different.
The Hradcany
side is a bit austere with sculptures of armor in it's
facade. While the Prague
Castle side is completely different with red, white
and blue stripes on the doors - the colors of the Czech
flag.

Much of what visitors remember
about Prague are the eclectic doors and doorways. Pisecka
Brana is no different. It has interesting thresholds and
doors on both sides.

This is one detail of the carvings in the gate's facade.
The care and creativity that went into building details
from centuries ago always leaves an impression on us.

There's a classic local cafe just inside the gate. It's perfect for apple strudel, coffee and of course beer. Stay awhile, chat with the manager and soak up the atmosphere. It's all just across the street from the "main" Prague attractions, yet you won't find tourists here.

This cool gate is easy to find. It's one tram stop before
Prague Castle and one street from the tram stop Kralovsky
Letohradek. Take the tram 22 to the stop Kralovsky
Letohradek, walk down into the little street and turn
right at the first street. The gate will be on your left.
The gate is also near Letna park with impressive views
over the city. The view below is a short walk from the
gate.
The address is K Brusce 5/208. Here's the gate on Google
Maps.
