Mar 5, Prague Spring... on the way?

Until this week, we've had snow on the ground since early January. But as the snow melted we found the first signs of spring. This is a classic flower in our Czech Republic - snowdrop (snezenky). It's always the first flower we see popping up through the snow - a well known marker that spring is on its way. Thank goodness!

<img src="http://www.my-prague-sights.com/images/snezenky.jpg" align="right"hspace="40">

Of course, as I write these words it has started snowing again! But Prague is beautiful in the snow.

Feb 24, Things to do in Prague - Towers Anyone?

Give your eyes (and camera) a treat by climbing one of many towers in Prague. You get stunning pictures of Prague and a unique experience in these old monuments. It's usually fairly cheap too.

<img src="http://www.my-prague-sights.com/images/view-from-st-nicholas-tower.jpg" align="right"hspace="40">

Prague is considered the city of one hundered spires, so take your pick which to climb. The two on Charles Bridge are certainly worth a look. Our favorite is the Old Town Hall. It offers impressive 360 degree views of the city.

Jan 11, Warm Treats on Cold Days

It's been bitterly cold here for a few days. So, going outside can take a little extra effort. A fresh covering of snow helps with a nice visual, but it's still cold.

So, what better time for some belly warming treats? Here are a couple of tried and true warm treats from Prague's streets. They're perfect fuel for winter sightseeing.

Trdlo: This doughy roll is baked on a rotisserie of sorts. Its smell is intoxicating as it turns golden brown before your eyes. When done, it's rolled in your choice of toppings like cinnamon and crushed nuts (all which include sugar).

Trdlo is a mainstay of festivals and open spaces like Old Town Square. I always choose the vendors that have a line. This way you're guaranteed a warm fresh trdlo!

<img src="http://www.my-prague-sights.com/images/trdlo.jpg" align="right"hspace="40">

Svarak: It's no secret that Czechs like their drinks - and I don't mean juice. So, on cold days you're likely to find a vendor or open restaurant window offering Hot Mulled Wine (Svarak). It's cheap red wine cooked with cloves, cinnamon and sugar (and sometimes orange).

Medovina: Okay, don't really know the contents of this one. Forgive me. It's Honey Wine! Syrupy sweet, tasty and hot. What else do you need here?

Grog: You can find this guy at vendors on Wenceslas Square and near metro stations away from tourist areas. It's basically hot water and rum. If you're lucky they put some lemon in it. I'm sure it's good for a cold!

Jan 3, Hvezda Summer Palace

Sure, it was snowy and cold out, but the grounds of the Hvezda (Star) Summer Palace were warm with beauty. We had a delightful walk today through its snowy woods and trails.

This 16th century palace was built in the shape of a 6 pointed star and the one-time hunting reserve now serves as a large wooded park. There are three main promenades that lead to the palace with a mixture of smaller trails for running and walking. The palace itself has splendid stucco ceilings and gorgeous marble floors. There's a permanent exhibition on the first floor dedicated to the palace and a detailed exhibition of the Battle of White Mountain in the basement. The palace is open from April - October and has a small entrance fee, but the grounds are open year round.

So, if you're looking for a place to go for a run or just get lost under oak trees, this is the place.

How to get there: take the 22 tram to Vypich a few stops after Prague Castle. At Vypich cross the street and follow the sidewalk to the next street. Across this street you will see Hvezda's large gated entrance beyond the field.

You can easily combine this stop with Brevnov Abbey which is two stops back toward the castle on the 22. But, we were cold so we hopped back on the tram and got off at Malostranske Namesti and headed for one of my favorite little cafes.

Cafe Kaficko is just parallel to Charles Bridge and serves great coffee, hot chocolate and yummy cakes in a simple quiet atmosphere. The owners are there to please and you won't find hordes of tourists inside. But, they are partial to clean air. It was the first fully non-smoking cafe in Prague. Kids are welcome too!

Cafe Kaficko: Misenska 10, At the House of the Golden Ram
